A driveway carries weight every day for years, so we build it that way. Residential pours run 4 inches thick with rebar through the high-traffic stretches, expansion joints set at intervals so cracks land where they should, and a clean broom finish you can rinse off with a hose. Most of the failed driveways we replace in Albertville and Otsego were under-spec'd at the joints from the start. We pour them right the first time. If you want it to look like more than a slab, stamped or exposed aggregate finishes are both on the table.
